How to get to CAS? A few of you have asked me the location of CAS. CAS is easily accessible. It is located between SIM and Ngee Ann Poly. =P For those taking public transport, you can take SBS bus 154 or TIBS 184 outside Clementi MRT Station (the bus top across the road from Clementi Mac AND NOT the bus stop along the Mac!). Alight immediately after you see Maju Camp on your left. This will be the bus stop outside SIM. You need to walk for about 5 mins before reaching CAS. Here is the map for your reference.

hi guys, i am kinda ashamed to admit that i haven't started choreographing the dance yet... cos i had 3 major assignments that were due yesterday. sorry! so i'm asking for some help... for those of you who are free and willing, please meet in school at 12pm tomorrow at our normal classroom okies? will attempt to choreograph in that 3 hours :) btw, if anyone is interested, the song that i have in mind is from A* Teens (or something like that) and it's called "Halfway Around the World." i'm assuming these kids will be around 12 years old, so teenybop will work for them rite? would be most grateful for your help guys. thanks in advance! cheers val | | Tuesday, November 8th, 2005 | | 7:23 pm |
Meet-up Session on 10th Nov 2005 @ 330pm
Hello everyone =P This is a reminder that we will be meeting this Thursday (10th Nov) at 330pm in the same tutorial room. I think it is best if we can meet there so that we can have ample space to practise the mass dance. For the info of everyone, the hiring of the candy floss machine will be about $200. In any case the price cannot be lowered (after negotiation by Huiwen), I guess it is best if we find an alternative to the candy floss machine activity. Therefore, hopefully the group in charge of the science workshop can finalise their proposal by that day. For those still completing their assignments, chia-yu! See all of you on the 10th Nov. Regards, Khai | | Saturday, September 24th, 2005 | | 4:51 pm |
got stuff
dear all, I've called ms. rita from CAS and she said one of us already emailed her but she would prefer if we called her. anyway i called her and she expressed that her society committee would like us to conduct a one weekday per week, one-hour long workshop for about 4 weeks. is that okay with us? and she also said that we could go in in november, as SMU students are conducting programmes for the society in october and another NIE GESL group's going to do their reading corner there too. anyway i also told her we all have really hectic schedules and tonnes of deadlines until late november, and she was okay with the arrangement. Can we discuss if it's okay for everyone if the programme goes on for four weeks, one weekday, one hour per week? Relevant Info: 1) Date/Period of Workshop: Late November - late December, either Monday or Thursday every week, 7.30 - 8.30 pm ( Lesson Planners take note of dates, duration and time periods of workshop) 2) Target Group: Primary 3 - 6 (ages 9 - 12) students; the Society will only be giving us 10 - 12 students to handle for our programme. Some are quiet and shy, some hyperactive, some also extremely clever, so we have to take these factors and personalities into consideration when we organise the event. (Gary & Khai take note) Right now we have no problems, except for the fact that they want us to come in for 4 lessons spanning across 4 weeks. We have to decide during GESL period next week if it's convenient for everyone then. I need to send Ms. Rita and CAS an official letter, proposal and programme of events if we decide to go ahead with this one. i personally feel that this is a good opportunity for us to learn how to handle a diverse class of students of different age groups and needs. Also i suppose they also realised that 2 evenings done ad-hoc isn't going to do us and them much good, so they changed their minds. perhaps the service learning component's gonna be much richer for us if we do this for 4 weeks. after all, it's only one weekday evening per week, one hour, which means 4 times (or 4 hours)a month. with this project we can also do different things weekly, like one week dance or music or drama, another week science/magic another week some reading or whatever and last week a closing party. it could be quite fulfilling for us and them. and we won't have to fret about doing it next yr :) Do ponder over this guys, see you all next wk. june | | Wednesday, September 14th, 2005 | | 4:33 pm |
Compiled details regarding stationery collection
Dear all, Shou Wee, Jaselin and I have come back with the following stuff for us all to consider: Schools interested in our stationery collection project: Greenridge Secondary School (100+ plus students) Westspring Secondary School (30+ students) Fajar Secondary School (110+ students) (courtesy of Jaselin) As for myself, the following schools have had their Pupil Welfare Heads express interest in our project, BUT they require our GESL group to write in to their schools officially to request for consideration or collaboration. The same goes for most of the schools Jas spoke to. Here are the contacts for the schools i spoke to and the addressees for our letters to them: Keming Primary School 65670455 (Attn Principal Mr. Michel Saw) Bukit View Primary School 65661980 (Attn VP Mrs. Seng) Dunearn Secondary School 65662126 (Attn Pupil Welfare Head Mrs Yvonne Lim) Shou Wee spoke to some schools too but most of them either had teachers who were too busy, and she was not very well-received as a result. Thanks Shou Wee for the effort you put in! Shou Wee also came up with very good websites we all can use and share throughout this course: Check out this list for contact details of organisations we may want to contact. http://www.ncss.org.sg/ncss/social_services/vwo.html# Lots of info avail on this NCSS site: http://www.ncss.org.sg/ncss/index.asp For eg, info on permit needed to collect $ is available on one of the links: http://www.spf.gov.sg/licence/frameset_HH.html(courtesy of Shou Wee) I have also come back with another opportunity for us all: The Children's Aid Society (64665758) would like for any group to go down to their place at Melrose Ave (next to Ngee Ann Poly and SIM Bt. Timah) to conduct a one or two-evening art/drama/dance workshop course for their children. These kids are aged 3 -12. Our science workshop idea as mooted by Gary and Khai's group could also hold water with them, but they requested we bring down the level to that of primary school kids; make it fun, simple and elementary emough for them to appreciate. I guess a Harry Potter-style magic tricks through the use of science workshop would be good for us and them, as long as our science people in the group can come up with relevant ideas. This is also a good activity, as it doesn't involve taking the kids out. Also CAS is in need of these workshops for their kids. Anyway, here are the issues we have to consider for our stationery collection project, or perhaps for any project we may be undertaking: 1)Costs involved - do we have to come up with anything else besides publicity, marketing and transport costs? 2) Publicity and marketing + collection strategies - how, where and why are we collecting stationery? 3) Logistics - Transport, resource movement, allocation and division. That's all for now.... Take care guys, see you all Friday. i DID NOT HAVE A GREAT VACATION. i HATED my trip, i HATE my ed psych and lit essays. ha! June | | Friday, September 9th, 2005 | | 9:51 pm |
reflections?
dear all, this is june here. have to apologise i think i made a mistake regarding the stationery needs thing. i misinterpreted a fellow teacher and thought she had to give away pens to needy students. this is wrong; she was giving them away as rewards instead. anyway, sorry for the misdirection everyone. this proves the point that it's really hard to tell where the stationery needs are genuinely needed. anyway shou wee's school had students who were genearally too poor to buy their own stationery, even though the money they were given, those grants, was supposed to cover things like stationery too. perhaps it would be better if we channelled our pooled resources better through say, orphanages or family service centers, if we do in the end proceed with this stationery collection project. P.S thanks yanshan for the advice and correction too! june |
